A Production.Ink Industry News round-up before Thanksgiving and a focus on the new Animation Guild labor deal
For all intents and purposes, our industry "season" of labor unrest is now officially over with news of the new three year deal between the AMPTP (the industry negotiating entity) and IATSE Local 839 (the Animation Guild). The new tentative deal includes increases to PH&W funds, wage improvements, addresses artificial intelligence and provides some level of writer staffing protections. On that last point, we have learned that the new deal mirrors the WGA in terms of staffing minimums for writers.
No details have yet emerged on the AI protections agreed to, but one suspects that it will also mirror the WGA on writers and illustrators. AI is obviously much more of a concern for the Animation Guild as that technology is more easily adapted to the animation format.
We will give you more information on all aspects of the new deal as we get them.
